FOX’s crime drama Prison Break centered on Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), a young man who was determined to prove the innocence of his convicted brother Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) and save him from death row by hatching an elaborate plan to break him out of prison. Premiering in the fall of 2005, the series proved to be a breakout success, garnering two Golden Globe nominations and winning the People’s Choice Award for ‘Favourite New TV Drama’.
Prison Break managed to keep audiences on the edge of their seats for four heart-pounding seasons before escaping from screens in May 2009. Fortunately for fans of the show, it has since been announced that a special 9-episode event series is in development . FOX has now confirmed that Sarah Wayne Callies has been locked in to reprise her role as Dr. Sara Tancredi, opposite fellow returning series stars Miller and Purcell.
It is crucial for the network to bring on board original cast members, since the event series model habitually promises fans that their favourite characters will return for at least one complete storyline. However, Callies has had quite a full schedule since Prison Break went off the air, having secured regular roles in AMC’s The Walking Dead and the sci-fi adventure series Colony, which has already been picked up for a second season but won’t interfere with her new commitments.
Meanwhile, there has been no further word on whether Robert Knepper, Rockmond Dunbar and Amaury Nolasco will reprise their respective roles as T-Bag, C-Note and Fernando. That said, it seems probable that they will sign up with many of the original team reuniting on the project, including series creator Paul T. Scheuring who will serve as the showrunner/head writer and Neal Moritz, Marty Adelstein and Dawn Olmsted, who will be taking the producers chairs.
The drama’s next chapter will pick up after Michael’s apparent death, as Sara raises her and Michael’s child with her new husband (guest star Mark Feuerstein). When clues begin to surface that suggest Michael may in fact be alive, Sara teams up with Lincoln to engineer the series’ biggest escape ever.
Michael sacrificed himself so that others could live and while it might appear to be a stretch to have him return from the grave in the upcoming series, it isn’t the first time that the show has taken that route. Sara’s death was faked early in season three in a move that shocked audiences; she was “beheaded” by Gretchen Morgan (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) and her “head” was delivered in a box to Lincoln – but, later in season four, we discovered that the head had been a ploy and that Sara was in fact still alive. Plus, we must remember the age-old adage of television: If you haven’t seen the body, then there’s no proof that they’re dead.
Screen Rant will keep you updated with all of the new developments on the Prison Break event series as they become available.
