A day after the rumour that Disney offered Zendaya the lead role for the upcoming live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, one fan has already conceptualized what the actress/singer could look like as Ariel. The result is sure to bring on the nostalgia for any Disney-loving child of the 80s and 90s.
The Zendaya casting rumor is the latest clue in what Disney fans can expect to see from the growing list of live-action Disney Princess feature films. Recently, Disney offered a first look at Liu Yifei as Mulan in the studio's 2020 adaptation. Meanwhile, the upcoming Aladdin movie will feature Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) as Princess Jasmine and Mena Massoud as the titular character, and Elle Fanning is expected to return as Princess Aurora in Maleficent II. If that isn't enough to be excited about, Dumbo, Pinocchio, and The Lion King are said to be moving forward as well.

The artwork was created and shared by Australian artist BossLogic. It features Ariel with her time-honored fiery red hair, purple clam shells, and green tail, perched on rocks as she gazes whimsically (possibly at her love interest Prince Eric on the shore). Anyone who knows the 1989 classic by heart can almost certainly imagine the rising crescendo of "Part of Your World," as waves collide behind the her. Check out of the full image below:
The post garnered over 1,000 likes hours after being published, although some comments would indicate that not everyone is a fan. It remains to be seen to what extent the controversy that followed Zendaya for being cast as a black actress to play the traditionally Caucasian, redhead Mary Jane (M.J.) Watson in Spiderman: Homecoming will reappear if she is set to play Ariel. Nevertheless, many fans were quick to show their support and enthusiasm for the casting idea. One follower even suggested Henry Cavill (Justice League) as her opposite, to play Prince Eric. As a performer, Zendaya more than has the talent and experience for a project as iconic as The Little Mermaid. She's already achieved resounding praise for her work in the musical giant, The Greatest Showman, and is moving ahead with the 2019 sequel to the blockbusting Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is currently filming.
One follower was curious as to why Ryan Reynolds was tagged the tweet. Look close enough, and Deadpool will appear in the background of the image, holding a fishing pole. This may be a jovial nod to the fourth-wall-breaking superhero appearing at will in any universe, or Disney's presiding ownership over Marvel Studios - which will soon include Deadpool, the rights of which currently belong to 20th Century Fox, but will transfer to Disney after the company's acquisition of Fox is finalized. For now, fans only have the possibility of Spider-Man's Zendaya making the leap from a superhero franchise to a live-action Disney retelling to look forward to. That is, if the casting rumor for The Little Mermaid turns out to be true.
